The Camp

Radical times led to the formation of many of today’s camps.

The 1960’s are known for great music, political change and the “Love” generation. The sixties also proved to be a time of rapid growth in denominational churches which led to the formation of many of today’s camps. Westview, established in 1966, was one of these camps. Church leaders wanted a place where children and youth could get back to the outdoors; learn about God and how to become better people with the guidance of caring adults. A search committee was formed and tracts of land around the Richmond Metro area were viewed and walked. Members of the committee spent the nights dreaming of what could be one day. Late in 1965, a tract of land was found in Goochland County that offered woods and fields, river frontage along the James River, streams and potential sites for a lake. The hilly terrain provided great vistas of the evening sun setting over the James River – a stunning West view. The search was over and in April of 1966, Westview on the James became a reality.

Today, Westview offers “a place apart” for Christian hospitality and learning for thousands of children, youth and adults. Our 780 acres of beautiful countryside and facilities provide plenty of space for summer camp, retreats and family camping, as well as a home for mission outreach to the community.
