1. What is Westview's current Resident Camp capacity and how many staff work with Summer camp?

Camp capacity is 150 children and youth with a staff of 22 college age Senior Counselors, 12 Junior Counselors (15 1/2 to 16 years of age), 5 activity specialists (Activities, Waterfront, Crafts, High Ropes, Nature), and 6 Senior Support Staff (17 years of age). Administrative Staff include a Summer Program Director, 2 Head Counselors, and the active involvement of the Camp Director and Director of Retreat Ministries.

2. What is the counselor to camper ratio?

  • 1 to 4 for Mini Camp (campers 6 to 7 years of age)
  • 1 to 7 for Resident Camp ( campers 7 to 14 years of age)
  • 1 to 6 for Adventure Camp ( campers 13 to 17 years of age)

Ratios only include Senior Staff (18 and older). Last year 59% of the camp staff returned from the previous year.

3. Can I stay with a friend at Camp?

Campers can request ONE person to stay in their Hogan. This allows the first time campers to feel comfortable, and open the way to meet many new friends. Campers age 6 to 11 years of age are put in day groups of similar age.

4. If my child doesn't like what's being served at a meal is there an alternative?

Yes! At breakfast, there will always be cereal, fruit and often yogurt. At lunch and dinner there will always be a salad and sandwich bar with peanut butter and jelly or cheese. In addition there will be vegetarian alternatives.

5. What is Westview's policy on dealing with homesickness?

When your child signs up for camp, you will receive a packet of information. In that information are our guidelines for homesickness and ways you, the parent, can help. We encourage the child who is homesick to give us a chance. Try us for 24 hours and, if the camper feels the same after that time, then the Program Director will call home and discuss the situation before you speak with your child. We want your child to stay at camp.  Sometimes it just takes your child to hear that you love them and that you want them to stay at camp too!   If you, determine the best option is to pick up your child, we will help you in that process.

6. Can I call my son or daughter at camp?

No.  You are welcome to call the camp office if you have concerns, but the busy camp schedule makes personal phone calls a problem. Check our web site for daily pictures of camp in action. Write often.  We will encourage campers to do the same.  If you receive a letter that characterizes a less than happy camp experience, please remember that the first letter home may have been written before they adjusted to camp life and new friends. If in doubt, please call the camp office.  If there is a family emergency, please call the camp office.

7. Is Westview an A.C.A accredited camp?

Since 1985, the American Camping Association has accredited Westview's Summer Camp program. Rigorous standards (over 300+) are met for the campsite, administration, personnel and program annually. Camps are visited every 3 years.  Westview was re-accredited during Summer 2006.
